Background

Bioconvergence바이오융합

Creation of Hanyang Bio Future Food

  • While research that results in substantial outcomes is performed in bio sectors locally and internationally, including large-scale technology transfers, disease diagnosis / new drug development, etc., Hanyang’s performance in biotechnology transfer and faculty entrepreneurship is still limited.
  • Need to create original core technology through Red, White, Platform Bioconvergence Research, transfer technology, and boost startups by the faculty entrepreneurship
  • Necessary to establish a “Bioconvergence” research institute that can take the initiative in developing cutting-edge convergence technology among the bio sectors on the campus and serve as a control towerBioconvergence

Focus on core development areas in national and private biosectors

  • Focus on bio–big data, new drugs, and digital health in national biodevelopment policy
  • Approximately KRW 10 trillion will be invested in national bio–big data, new drug development, and digital health business over the next 10 years
  • Approximately KRW 10 trillion will be invested by Korean biofirms by 2023 (in bio new drugs, medical devices, digital health, big data)

The era of big data–based value creation in the future

  • Bio–big data (genome, personal health data, clinical/treatment data) will be used more in drug development, medical devices, and molecular diagnosis. - Expansion of digital health-care service
  • Bio–big data creates value by shortening the drug development time and reducing costs

Need for Hanyang Bioresearch Infrastructure

  • Absence of a bio equipment core facility, which is an essential research facility
  • No support on-campus for a business incubator (BI) / data analysis to respond to the rapid demand for genome and bio–big data analysis.
  • Need to establish a special committee for biopatent core technology, technology evaluation, and technology transfer

Vision and Five Goals

HY Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology

HY-IBB

Hanyang Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology

Hanyang Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (HY-IBB) was established to lead the fourth industry and data-based bioconvergence sectors and establish Hanyang’s bioconvergence core research group and infrastructure to preoccupy convergence technologies for smart disease diagnosis and treatment from the molecular to the patient level. We aim to preoccupy original core technologies through basic bioscience research; secure original technologies for biotechnology application through bio–big data, smart diagnosis, and new biodrug research; and support the research life cycle in which precision medical technology is led to clinical research.Through these efforts, we intend to establish a bioconvergence research ecosystem by expanding original biotechnology transfer and faculty entrepreneurship, preparing sustainable bioconvergence research strategies, linking researchers, and providing technology education for use in schools and industries.

In addition, we plan to establish a Bioresource Center (genomic core, biological sample analysis core, bioimaging core, biocomputing core, etc.), an essential research facility in the biosectors, under the wings of HY-IBB and install general purpose equipment to be utilized by Hanyang’s biomembers.

In addition, HY-IBB will select and support 1) innovative convergence research that can make a leap forward in qualitative terms, 2) practical convergence research that enables the commercialization of research results, and 3) task-based convergence research that can be a candidate for large-scale national projects as its “Key Convergence Research” targets and plan to support newly hired professors.
